A History of Rusty River’s Ministry
From such humble beginnings
On October 13, 1988, Rusty River assumed the position of Senior Pastor of Rusty River’s Ministry. His unbounded self-confidence showed from the beginning. To a straggling crowd of strangers, he announced his dream of building a church with 23,000 members, located on 70 acres of land, sending out hundreds of career missionaries, and starting at least one satellite church a year. "I stand before you today and state in confident assurance that these dreams will become reality. Why? Because they are inspired by God!"
Under Pastor Rusty’s leadership and with the support of his doting wife Ruthie, the Ministry has grown in every area. It added two additional worship services in order to accommodate the astounding growth in an auditorium that seats 7,800. With nearly 130,000 adults in weekly attendance and over 2,500 children attending weekly children's programs, The Rusty River Ministry has doubled in attendance in the last two years. In addition, the Ministry’s weekly television show can be seen in 100 million households in the USA, Canada and around the world. With a heart and commitment to people of all ages and backgrounds, Rusty has seen the need to increase the staff in every area of ministry including children, youth, college and singles, young adults and senior citizens
Rusty River’s Ministry intends to double its attendance to 300,000 with its new worship center that is larger than the current 130,000-seat auditorium. Plans call for dual venues using videotaped sermons and live music in different styles. The church, Rusty suggests, will be like a Cineplex, where you never feel late because there is always a service about to begin somewhere in the complex. There will be all kinds of shops, concessions, auto dealerships, a gymnasium, an indoor track and, YES, a Starbucks. It will be just like going to a mall and the theater at the same time. Only God will be there!

The Future
With the retirement of our beloved founders Rusty and Ruthie River, we have begun a new era for the world renowned Rusty River Ministries. Both of them have only retired from the grind of the daily labors of running this huge, international ministry. They are not only with us in spirit but with there tender loving, guiding hands. We pray the Lord will grant us the foresight and wisdom they have provided over their decades of leadership for decades to come.
The torch has been passed.
Now, under the inspired, divinely directed of Senior Pastor, the Right
Reverend Scheila Schuller Coalson and her dutifully attendant husband Jay,
there is assurance from God Almighty that the ministry of reaching out to a
lost and hurting world, started by her father, will continue into the next
generation and beyond. It is the vision from God, that the R.R.
Ministries will bring His peace to all the world through a massive effort by
Christians united around the world to battle what Pastor Sheila calls
the “five global demons” of spiritual emptiness, .corrupt leadership,
poverty, disease, and illiteracy by promoting reconciliation, equipping
servant leaders, assisting the poor, caring for the sick, and educating the
next generation. His plan will not fail. Come join us in this
great adventure! With you, we look forward to a bigger and brighter
future.
