BOBBY V. SCHULLER

BIOGRAPHY

Bobby Schuller is the pastor of the Gathering Community, a ministry of the Crystal Cathedral, intending to communicate to people who have been hurt by institutional religion and who seek an organic relationship with God. This community is made of a mosaic of people from many different walks of life, races, ages, and classes all journeying toward a better Christian life through life-long friendships, the celebration of the arts, and intentional social action- helping the poor and the disenfranchised. Many people call this grass roots movement "church for the rest of us."

Bobby received his Bachelor of Science from Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma and received a Masters in Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA. He regularly speaks at venues and churches across the country including regular appearance on the Hour of Power. He was also the youngest person ever invited to be a chaplain at the venerable Chautauqua Institute in New York.

Bobby also lived in Hanover, Germany as the host of the show Frequency X, a project by the Pavilion of Hope at the World Expo in 2000. This show featured all the major concerts and clubs at the Expo and in Germany. Later, in 2006, he would go to work as a judge on The Messengers, a show produced by Original Productions and the learning channel. This project hoped to find America's next inspirational speaker through interfaith dialogue and speech competition. He currently lives with wife Hannah in Orange, CA.

Our history
“OC Gathering” was originally conceived as a College group for the Crystal Cathedral.
 

A small group of ten or so people would meet in the parking lot to eat, commune and grow together while enjoying both the company and, more often than not, hamburgers. As more and more people came to be a part of the genuine connection made through the weekly gatherings, Bobby knew that something greater was happening. The group became a church, a separate entity unto itself, though they continued to meet at the Cathedral – they became the Gathering.

The idea of a small community where people knew each other and were able to grow together developed into a greater purpose: The desire to make a difference in the Gathering’s community. This meant that once a month there was some sort of outreach event in their town. Even now, the Gathering strives to make a genuine and tangible impact in their community through monthly outreaches, a weekly celebration of community and daily prayer..

“The real reason we started the Gathering is because we felt that most churches demand that a person changes before he or she can be a part of their communities. At the Gathering we think it’s the other way around – if you become a part of the community it will eventually change you. This means that no matter what, we make a home for people regardless of religious tradition, questions, dress, or anything like that. God our Father, we pray
In the name of Christ Jesus our Savior
That our community would be built on lifelong friendships
As we journey toward you.

Jesus is the vine
God is the vinedresser
The Holy Spirit is the sap
And we are the branches.

Help us to abide in you
Bearing in immeasurable harvest
The fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
Goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

We pray that Your kingdom would come to our world
That you would remove the curse of evil
And that we could be a part of your rescue mission
To a lost and dying world.
